The History of Establishment

University of Muhammadiyah Prof. DR. HAMKA (referred to as UHAMKA) is one of the private universities owned by organization of Muhammadiyah which is located in Jakarta. As one of amal usaha (special task force) of Muhammadiyah, UHAMKA is an Islamic education college based on Al Quran and As-Sunah and based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution which performs caturdharma of Muhammadiyah Higher Education, which is for the guidance of faith and belief to Allah Swt, education and teaching, research, and community service according to Islamic guidance.
UHAMKA was a form of the Institute of Teacher Training and Education (IKIP) Muhammadiyah Jakarta with the initial name of Teacher Education College (PTPG). PTPG was inaugurated on 25 Rabiul Awal 1377 H / 18 November 1957, with the founders of whom were Arso Sosroatmodjo (Chairman) and HS Prodjokusumo (Secretary). In line with government policy, in 1958 PTPG transformed into the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) which was based on the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta (UMJ). In that same year, FKIP was trusted by the Department of Religious Education, Ministry of Religious Affairs, to train employees to become qualified PGA teachers. In 1965, FKIP UMJ established itself under the name IKIP Muhammadiyah Jakarta (IKIP-MJ) and in 1979 until 1990 won the trust of the government to manage the Diploma Program of Education Project of Educational Staff. From 1990 up to 1997 IKIP-MJ won the trust to manage the Primary School Teacher Education Program (PGSD). The PGSD D2 program then continued into 2007, even in 2007 UHAMKA was entrusted to organize Regular S1 PGSD Programs and Distance Learning Programs (PJJ). In addition, UHAMKA was also given the trust to implement the Teacher Certification Program and Teacher Professional Education, impressive and encouraging because it is only given to very few private universities in Indonesia. The executives of IKIP-MJ saw that IKIP Muhammadiyah Jakarta needed to be improved continuously its role to participate in providing human resources quality, both in the field of education and non-educated, The effort taken is to convert IKIP Muhammadiyah Jakarta became University. For that purpose, it was formed the University Conversion Team, which was chaired by Prof. Drs. H. Sudarno Sinduwiryo, M.Ed. After going through various processes, the Minister of Education and Culture through the Directorate General of Higher Education Ministry of Education and Culture decided and set the change of form of IKIP-MJ became University of Muhammadiyah Prof. DR. HAMKA with the Decree of Directorate General of Higher Education Ministry of Education and Culture no. 138 / DIKTI / Kep / 1997, dated May 30, 1997.

About UHAMKA’s Name

About usage of Prof. DR. Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah (more popular and familiarly called HAMKA) as the name of this college is based on the approval of the family of Buya HAMKA with Muhammadiyah Central Executive which validated through written memorandum of understanding. Name of Prof. DR. HAMKA was chosen because this character has an extraordinary spirit in self-study, (autodidact), complete, and lasts for life. Prof. DR. HAMKA is a multi-dimensional figure in a variety of expertise, i.e. intellectual clerics, intellectuals of scholars, a skilled and unique writer, as well as a journalist and master preachers of Muhammadiyah. The characteristic of Buya HAMKA strengthened with his appointment as National Hero in 2011.

The submission of Decree of Directorate General of Higher Education was conducted by Coordinator of Kopertis Region III on June 9, 1997. Subsequently announced publicly by the Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah, Dr. HM. Amien Rais, MA. at Graduation Ceremony and Graduate Diploma Program of IKIP-MJ and Inauguration of Muhammadiyah University of Prof. DR. HAMKA on June 11, 1997, at the Jakarta Convention Center (Jakarta Hilton Convention Center) as well as confirmed the Rector of IKIP Muhammadiyah Jakarta, Drs. H. Qomari Anwar, MA., became the first Rector of Muhammadiyah University of Prof. DR. HAMKA.
